SLOAN STEM+SAT PREP COURSE

INFORMATION

A successful SAT score can be a significant determining factor that helps students get accepted into their desired university or qualify for financial aid packages that reduce the monetary burden of pursuing post-secondary education. While factors such as overall GPA and grades in college preparatory classes remain strong indicators for consideration, SAT scores are a moderate to considerable factor for 82% of colleges. Additionally, for many African American students, resources to prepare students for the SAT have been inaccessible on a large scale. In addition to other factors, this reality is evident in the average test scores of African American test takers. The average SAT score in 2023 was 1028; however, the average score for African Americans was 908, compared to 1082 for white students.

To apply for the program, students must submit an application and an unofficial transcript, replicating the college entrance process. The application would include factors like the highest-level math class completed (Algebra II is preferred) and extracurricular activities. Students will also be asked if special accommodations are required for different learning abilities.

Applicants will be selected based on:

  • Grade level - junior (preferred) or senior high school student enrolled in a local institution
  • Algebra II completion is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing a college education
  • (Optional) Prior completion of a college admissions exam (PSAT, ACT, etc.)
  • Participated in SLOAN STEM programs or volunteered
  • or The Luke Church member/community member
