A successful SAT score can be a major determining factor that helps students get accepted into their desired university or qualify for financial aid packages that reduce the monetary burden of pursuing post-secondary education. While factors like overall GPA and grades in college preparatory classes remain strong indicators for consideration, SAT scores remain a moderate or considerable factor for 82% of colleges. Additionally, for many African American students, resources to prepare students for the SAT have been inaccessible at a large scale. In addition to other factors, this reality can be seen in the average test scores for African American test takers. The average SAT score in 2023 was 1028; however, the average score was 908 for African Americans compared to 1082 for white students.
To apply for the program, students must submit an application and an unofficial transcript to replicate the college entrance process. The application would include factors like the highest-level math class completed (Algebra II is preferred) and extracurricular activities. Students will also be asked if special accommodations are required for different learning abilities.
