SLOAN STEM+Arts Summer Camp offers a dynamic blend of STEM plus Art activities tailored for minority students.
Participants can expect hands-on projects, including building robots, designing and creating online games, coding, AI and VR workshops, art and photography sessions, and creative expression through music, audiovisual arts, and digital arts.
The camp aims to foster innovation, boost confidence with mentorship, leadership, and entrepreneurship classes, and nurture a desire and respect for learning.
Our students have demonstrated improved problem-solving skills, enhanced creativity, and a stronger foundation in STEM, as well as the Arts, ultimately empowering them to pursue further education and career opportunities in these fields.
OUR WHY:
Black Americans are 13% of the U.S. population, but just 8–9% of the STEM workforce.
Black women? Less than 3% of federal STEM roles.
Meanwhile, STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as fast as non-STEM jobs and pay $30,000 more on average, offering a 6-figure career.
We’re talking tech, AI, biotech, clean energy, cybersecurity, and we’re being locked out.
This isn’t a pipeline problem.
It’s an access and equity problem.
If we’re not at the table now, we’ll be left out of the future, again.
STEM needs us. And we need STEM.

Ms. Butler is a music teacher in Aldine ISD.
Her focus for our camp is ORFF instruments. Orff refers to a specific approach to music education developed by Carl Orff during the 1920s, which combines music, speech, movement, and drama into music lessons that are very similar to the way a child plays naturally. The term “Schulwerk” is German for schoolwork.
